Ultimate Frisbee is a sport that requires both athleticism and endurance. It is one of the fastest growing sports in America and commonly played on university campuses and parks. General Ultimate Frisbee Rules goes as follows: The object of the sport is to score points by passing the ultimate disc to a player in the opposing end zone, similar to an end zone in American football or rugby. Basic ultimate rules involve two teams of seven players on each. One team pulls the disc to the other as in a kick-off scenario. Once the receiving team gains possession of the ultimate disc then the ultimate frisbee players pass the disc to their teammates to advance up the ultimate field toward the end zone. Running with the disc is forbidden and the only way to gain forward progress is by passing the disc. The opposing ultimate team attempts to thwart the offense by intercepting the disc or (more commonly) knocking the disc to the ground during a pass. Once the ultimate disc hits the ground the possession changes. For more detailed ultimate frisbee rules see our Ultimate Frisbee Rules page. Ultimate Frisbee HistoryThe ultimate frisbee history begins with Joel Silver, a graduate of Lafayette College, proposed a school Frisbee team on a whim in the fall of 1968. The following spring, a group of students got together to play what Silver claimed to be the "ultimate game experience," adapting the sport from a form of Frisbee football, likely learned from Jared Kass while attending a summer camp at Northfield Mount Hermon, Massachusetts where Kass was teaching. The students who played and codified the rules at Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey, were an eclectic group of students including leaders in academics, student politics, the student newspaper, and school dramatic productions. One member of the original ultimate team was Walter Sabo, who went on to be a major figure in the American radio business. The sport became identified as a counterculture activity. Ultimate frisbee history cont... Ultimate Disc and Ultimate Frisbee DiscThere is often some confusion about the terms ultimate disc and Frisbee disc. That is because "Frisbee®" is a registered trademark name (a brand name if you will) when it is often assumed to mean a general flying disc. Frisbee® is an owned trademark of Wham-O, hence the "Wham-O Ultimate Frisbee discs." Often times people refer to ultimate discs that are not Frisbees as "frisbee discs" despite the Wham-O ultimate frisbee being a completely different type of disc. It's like people referring to tissues as Kleenex, no matter what brand name it actually is. However the official ultimate disc of USA Ultimate is the Discraft Ultra-Star which introduces the phrase "ultrastar frisbee". There is no such thing as an "ultrastar frisbee" disc nonetheless you can understand the meaning. The Ultra-Star ultimate disc is a 175 gram disc designed with great durability, excellent control and amazing distance capabilities for your ultimate frisbee game. Visit Discraft Ultra-Stars for ultimate disc images and purchase options. 175 Gram Flying Ultimate Disc
